The U.N. ineffective? I'm shocked....

    From MSNBC/WashPost:

A U.N.-African Union peacekeeping force faced the first major challenge to its authority in Darfur, Sudan, this week, enduring more than 10 minutes of hostile fire from Sudanese forces without responding with a single shot.

The assault Tuesday evening against a clearly marked supply convoy of more than 20 trucks and armored personnel vehicles left a Sudanese driver critically wounded and prompted a formal protest from U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. It also gave the U.N.-backed force a humiliating defeat during the critical first weeks of its mission in Darfur.

Ladies and gentlemen, all the United Nations is good for is talking.  It's useless for actually doing anything except for running the most corrupt programs in the history of the world.

This is why the United States will be required for the forseeable future to mount any sort of effective peacekeeping or preemptive actions in the world.  It's safe to say that the Sudanese military forces wouldn't have taken pot shots for ten minutes without retaliatory fire if it were U.S. forces there.  Instead, the Powder Blue Helmets fail to teach a lesson to Sudan about what is and is not appropriate behavior in the presence of peacekeeping troops.

This is why Thomas Barnett is clear that although we need to split our military into the Leviathan (war) part and the SysAdmin (post-war) part, the Marines go to the SysAdmin side.  That way, if anyone wants to get uppity during post-war peace and rebuilding operations (like in Darfur right now), the Marines will open a large can of whoop-ass, like only the Marines can.

The UN is a debating society with way too much budget, that satisfies the need of Greens to talk and talk and talk without coming to any conclusions, and even if conclusions are drawn, the lack of will to implement the consequences of those conclusions is laughable.

    And so it goes again...
